Summer Learning: Assignments for Students Taking Advanced or Honors Courses in 2026-2027
Welcome to Advanced Coursework in East Haven Public Schools for Summer 2026! Summer assignments are designed to help students prepare for the pace, expectations, and level of thinking required in advanced classes. By engaging with course-related reading, research, writing, and problem-solving before the school year begins, students build background knowledge, strengthen academic skills, and develop greater confidence as learners. Completing these assignments will help students start the year ready to participate in meaningful discussions, tackle challenging content, and make the most of the opportunities available in their courses.

To help students prepare for success in their mathematics courses next year, students enrolled in accelerated mathematics pathways are expected to complete the following Khan Academy summer learning activities. These free, self-paced courses review prerequisite skills and help students build confidence before the start of the school year.
Students Entering Pre-Algebra (Grade 7)
Students entering Pre-Algebra should complete Khan Academy's Get Ready for 8th Grade Math course. This course reviews essential mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills that will support success in our accelerated Grade 7 mathematics program.
Students Entering Algebra 1 (Grade 8)
Students entering Algebra 1 should complete Khan Academy's Get Ready for Algebra 1 course. This course reinforces key prerequisite skills, including operations with rational numbers, expressions, equations, proportional relationships, and linear thinking, helping students prepare for the demands of Algebra 1.
Students are encouraged to work consistently throughout the summer and complete their assigned course prior to the start of the school year. Students will be assessed on the prerequisite skills and concepts covered in these summer learning activities during the first week of school. Completing the assigned work will help students begin the year with confidence and a strong foundation for success in their mathematics course.

Students entering Honors Geometry are required to complete Units 1 and 2 of Khan Academy's Get Ready for Geometry course. These units review foundational concepts such as proportional reasoning, similarity, angle relationships, and the Pythagorean Theorem, ensuring students are prepared for the rigor and pace of an honors-level geometry course.
Students are encouraged to work consistently throughout the summer and complete their assigned course prior to the start of the school year. Students will be assessed on the prerequisite skills and concepts covered in these summer learning activities during the first week of school. Completing the assigned work will help students begin the year with confidence and a strong foundation for success in their mathematics course.

Recommended Summer Learning Activity: Online AP Summer Prep Course Offered through the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History
Title: AP United States History: Hidden Figures
Description: This course will discuss the content covered in AP US History (APUSH) by highlighting the “hidden figures” of APUSH. These are lesser-known people who played a significant role in American history. Each class will be dedicated to uncovering individuals from two or three of the nine periods of APUSH and discussing skills necessary to excel in both the course and exam.
Course Dates: June 29–August 3, 2026
Live Session Time Slot: Mondays, 5–6 p.m. ET
Deadline to register: Friday, June 26

Recommended Summer Learning Activity: Online AP Summer Prep Course Offered through the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History
Title: AP United States Government and Politics: An Overview
Description: The AP United States Government and Politics exam is a challenge worthy of a great nation. During this course, students will have the opportunity to understand the exam’s structure, learn about key portions of each unit of study, gain insight into the course’s foundational documents, access sample multiple-choice questions, and learn how to successfully answer free-response questions.
Course Dates: July 16–August 13, 2026
Live Session Time Slot: Thursdays, 5–6:15 p.m. ET
